Watch Out For Vampire PowerWith your appliances, whether it is your coffee maker or your television, something to watch out for is vampire power. Vampire power is something that people are only starting to realize exists, but this little known drain on power adds up to a lot of wasted energy.
Vampire power is essentially power that your appliances suck in when they are not in use. For example, when you turn your television off, it is still drawing in power. The light that is lit when it is in standby needs to be powered. This means that you are still paying for the energy of that television. This is vampire power.
These standby devices contribute a great deal of power, often as much as eight percent, to the total electricity bill, but many estimates say it is much higher. Some things to consider with vampire power devices:
Even your cell phone charger is guilty of vampire power. When you charge your cell phone, even if the cell phone is completely charged, the charger still draws power that is not being used. If you take your phone off the charger, the charger still draws power! That is power that goes nowhere and that is energy you are wasting.
When you get rid of the vampire power in your house, you can save as much as 20 percent on your electric bill. This is just by unplugging things that do not need to be plugged in until they are being used. You would unplug these items when you are on vacation, so why not unplug them when you are not using them?
If everyone where to unplug all the vampire power devices, there would be millions of tons of CO2 prevented from going into the atmosphere. This would help slow global warming and it would help the planet greatly. Many people underestimate just how much power is being used by vampire power devices and this is most unfortunate.
By unplugging devices, you are saving the environment and saving money. It is win-win for everyone. | |||
