Some Ways to Help the Environment
If you want to help the environment, you do not have to alter your entire lifestyle, although it does help. Instead, you can simply do a few things that will help the environment and protect it for your children and grandchildren.
- First of all, turn down the thermostat. When you are sleeping, you can turn the thermostat down by 10 degrees and use one-quarter less energy. If you are having a lot of people over, then turn the thermostat way down because the body heat of everyone will warm up the house.
- When you are brush your teeth, turn off the tap. You do not need to leave the water running as you brush, only when you rinse. If you turn off the tap while you brush, you can save eight gallons of water per day, or 3,000 per year.
- When you are not in a room, turn off the light. By keeping one light off, for one hour a day, you can save 20,000 watt per year. Think of how much you will save when you turn off most of your lights.
- Roughly 5,000,000,000,000 plastic bags are made each year. The United States uses hundreds of billions and Canada uses 90 billion. Most bags end up in landfills and make their way to the oceans where they kill animals. Plastic bags last for 1,000 years, so instead of buying plastic bags, just use cloth bags.
- Get energy-efficient reusable batteries. Each year, 15,000,000,000 batteries go into the landfills. Instead of throwing out batteries, use rechargeable batteries. They can be used 500 times before they are no longer chargeable.
- When you leave a room, close the door to the room. Closed doors trap in heat and therefore allow your furnace to use less energy when heating up the house.
When you want to help the environment, you can get a hybrid car, you can install solar panels but sometimes that is not always feasible. It can be difficult to alter one’s life that much. Instead, why not try just doing a few things each day to help the environment. If everyone just spent five minutes helping the environment, global warming and pollution would not be a problem. The world can be changed with small steps; all it takes is enough people making those small steps. With these six steps, you can be one of those people.
