Putting In The Right Windows
If you are renovating your home and you want to get the most out of your windows, then you should look at putting in proper windows that can trap the heat in, or keep it out, depending on the season. There are a wide variety of windows that are available to you as a homeowner. However, it is not all about your windows, sometimes it is about where the windows are on the house, or what you do around the windows.
Cold Weather Tips
- With a clear plastic, heavy-duty sheet on the frame, you can keep the cold out of the home and the heat in. Make sure the plastic is over the window firmly, with no gaps or rips.
- Put in window shades on the windows if you feel the window is bringing in a draft.
- Curtains should be closed at night and opened during the day to bring in the most heat and keep the cold out.
- If you are building a home, put the larger windows on the south side of the house.
- Storm windows are very important. They can reduce the heat loss in a home by 25 to 50 percent in the winter time.
- Make sure you put weather-stripping on all your storm windows to ensure there is no draft.
Warm Weather Tips
- Put up white window shades and blinds. This will reflect the heat away from the house. If you put up dark curtains or blinds, it will absorb the heat and make the room hotter.
- If you have south and west facing windows, then make sure you close the curtains during the day.
- As well, put awnings on windows that face to the south and to the west.
- Put a reflective film or sun-control system on your windows. This will lose the amount of heat that comes into your home from the sun.
The windows are important parts of any renovations. By putting in the right windows, you can stop heat loss, keep the cool air in and help the environment. The more heat that is lost in your home, the harder the furnace has to work. The more cold air that is lost in your home in the summer, the harder your air conditioner has to work. Make sure you put in the right windows for your climate to maximize your energy efficiency.
