Making Your Home Office Energy Efficient
If you work from home, or just have a computer, chances are you are going to want to make your home office energy efficient. It is important you do this because there are a lot of things that drain energy in your home office including your computer, printer and monitor.
In order to save energy and be greener in your home office, you should use these tips with your home office.
- Replace your CRT monitor with an LCD monitor that is Energy Star compliance. By doing this you will be using a fraction of the energy you used with your larger CRT monitor.
- Instead of leaving your equipment plugged in when you are not using it, unplug everything when you are out of the home office. This means unplugging your computer, printer, monitor, scanner, fax machine and more. This prevents vampire power from costing you money.
- On your desktop or laptop, use power management. This will save you energy by putting your computers into standby when you are away from the computer for a little while. Set it so that your monitor goes into standby at 15 minutes, your desktop at 30 minutes and everything goes into hibernate at 45 minutes.
- One little-used tip is to replace your modem and router with a gateway device. This puts the power of two devices into one that uses much less energy.
- For the lights in your office, replace the incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs. This will save you money and provide you with light bulbs that will last a lot longer.
- If you have a window in your home office, close the blinds when it is in the middle of the day. This will keep you from getting too hot and using the air conditioner. Likewise, if you find that you are getting cold, have the blinds open so that the sun can warm up your office.
Your home office is somewhere that you may spend a lot of time. If it is, then you are going to need to find ways to make it more energy efficient. You will do this not only for your wallet, but for the environment as well. A big part of going green is about conservation and if we can all conserve what we have, we can save money, energy and the environment all at the same time.
