Improve Your Garden Now With Companion Planting
Did you know that you do not need to use herbicides or pesticides in your garden? Did you know that organizing your garden properly can increase garden yields without having to use harmful chemicals? This is green gardening at its best because you are using exactly what nature provides and knowing how to use them together can increase crop yields in your garden. It is called companion planting and it is the greenest of the green gardening methods.
First of all, planting different plants together can create smells that will confuse insects and it will keep them from laying eggs in the garden. You can also put plants in your garden that will keep insects away. Peppermint works against ants, white cabbage and garlic works against aphids. Chives keep spider mites away, and basil will deter flies and mosquitoes.
You should also take care of the plants that you plant around each other in the garden. Here is a handy guide to help you with your green gardening:
- Beans are good near celery and cucumbers but not onions.
- Beets are good with bush beans, lettuce, onions and cabbage but not pole beans and mustard.
- Cabbage, celery, onions and potatoes all work well together, but keep away strawberries, beans and tomatoes.
- Carrots, radishes, onions, tomatoes and lettuce all grow well together but keep dill away.
- Corn grows well near pumpkins, peas, beans, potatoes and cucumbers but you should keep your tomatoes away.
- Cucumbers like corn, radishes, beans, sunflowers and peas but they grow poorly around potatoes.
- Lettuce does well with onions, strawberries, carrots, radishes and cucumbers.
- Onions near lettuce is good. You can also plant onions around lettuce, strawberries and tomatoes, but keep them away from peas and beans.
- Radishes will grow well around beetroot, carrots, spinach, cucumbers and beans, but not near cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli and turnips.
- Try and plant squash near cucumbers and corn for the best results.
- Tomatoes will do well with carrots and onions, and basil near tomatoes improves their flavor. Keep cabbage and cauliflower away though.
Companion planting is using green growing methods from the past to increase yields, protect the garden and improve the soil without ever having to use chemical fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides.
