How To Make A Solar Cooker
If you have an oven, it most likely uses a lot of power. That power adds up to money you have to spend, but things are beginning to change. Many homeowners are now learning that they can actually make their own oven, which uses the power of the sun to heat and cook. Solar cookers cost much less than typical ovens to make, and they can reach high temperature levels, pushing over 400 F in some cases.
In order to make a simple solar cooker, do the following:
- Get two boxes. One of the boxes needs to be smaller than the other box, with at least two inches of space on each side.
- The bottom of the large box should be lined with crumpled up newspapers.
- Put the small box inside the large box.
- Fill the space on the sides with crumpled newspaper.
- Taking some aluminum foil, line up the sides of the smaller box and then use tape to fold the edges of the foil down over the box for a smooth look.
- Line the bottom of the smaller box with black construction paper.
- Put cardboard on top of the large box and trace the shape of the box onto the cardboard.
- Add two inches around the line you traced and cut out the square.
- Cover this cardboard piece with aluminum foil and make sure it is smooth without wrinkles.
- Secure the foil to the piece of cardboard with tape.
- Put this on the back of the larger box.
Now that you have created the box, you just need to position the box so that it is facing the sun in order to gain maximum heat. If you put clear plastic over the top of the box, you will be able to secure the heat in the box, thereby making it easier to heat up.
Put an oven temperature gauge in the box and see how high it begins to heat up!
The great thing about solar cookers is that they are very cheap to make but they can get to such high temperatures. On a really hot day, you could find your solar cooker heating up high enough to even cook you supper. It will take some time to fine tune the solar cooker for what you want, but once you do you will find it is perfect for a home that is eco-friendly.
