Helping the Environment with Proper Lawn CareYard work can be tough, and when you want to go green with the lawn it can be even tougher. A good example of this is going green by using a manual lawnmower. We all know these types of lawnmowers, they existed decades ago and they mow by the power of the person pushing the lawnmower. There is no gas; there is no electricity, just manual movement.
With a manual lawnmower, the grass is cut as the mower is pushed around. A blade on the front of the mower turn as the mower is pushed, cutting the grass. These mowers are designed to be lightweight and they can provide a great deal of exercise for anyone who is using them. The best part is that there is no carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere when they are pushed.
While a riding lawnmower will cost you hundreds of dollars, a manual lawnmower will only cost about $100 at most. These mowers will last longer than other mowers and they do not take up a lot of space. One great factor with these mowers is that they chop up the grass and then leave the grass mulch on the lawn. This then feeds the lawn with nitrogen, which helps the lawn grow and become stronger and more drought resistant.
It is important to remember that a traditional lawnmower uses about 22 pounds of CO2 in just one hour. This means that if you mow your lawn with a traditional lawnmower every two weeks for one hour, from April to September, you are putting 264 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. A manual lawnmower puts no carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Another way to go green with your lawn is to pay attention to the weather. Many people overwater their lawns every year. Typically, your lawn only needs about one inch of water each week. If you know it is going to rain in the next few days, then you can probably choose not to water your lawn. Let the rain do it for you. Better yet, let the rain do it for you and then collect rainwater in barrels that you can use later to water the lawn when it is more dry. Then you are not hurting the water table at all and you are helping the environment.
Taking care of the yard in a green way can take longer but it is very much worth it. | |||
