Have You Thought About A Hydrogen Car?Perhaps you do not want a hybrid car, or an electric car, but have you thought about getting a hydrogen car? Hydrogen cars may seem like they are nothing more than science fiction, but not only does hydrogen car technology exist, there have actually been hydrogen cars made.
A hydrogen car is a car that uses hydrogen as its source of power for driving, rather than gasoline. With a hydrogen car, the vehicle is powered by either combustion or fuel-cells. When a car is powered by combustion, the hydrogen is burned in the engine, no different than when gasoline is burned within the engine. However, in fuel-cell technology, the hydrogen is turned into electricity. With both methods, the only by-product created is water.
The first hydrogen vehicle came about in 1999, when Honda made the FCX. Later on, they introduced the FCX Clarity in 2008 in both the United States and Japan . However, the only place you can buy an FCX Clarity is in Los Angeles , which has 16 hydrogen fueling stations. The vehicle is expected to be mass-produced by the year 2020. One of the main reasons that the hydrogen car has not taken off quite yet is because they need hydrogen fuelling stations and only a few exist in California and Canada , as well as parts of Europe . However, new technology is finding ways to make hydrogen fuel at home, which could make the hydrogen fuel cell car much more common on the roads, just like the hybrid car is.
If you do not want to buy a new hydrogen car, you can actually convert your current vehicle to run on a gas form of hydrogen. There are many kits online that allow for the ability to convert your vehicle to a combination of hydrogen gas and gasoline. If you want to get the most efficiency though, then you should look at hydrogen fuel cells, which operate at an efficiency of about 80 percent, while gasoline vehicles operate at an efficiency of 30 to 40 percent.
While the hydrogen car may be a few years away from being mass-produced, there are hydrogen fuel-cell generators you can buy that will give you power to your home, and there are now unites being made that will allow you to create hydrogen fuel at home. Who knows, perhaps in just a few years you will be driving a hydrogen vehicle. | |||
