Have You Thought About A Composting Toilet?
The toilet is a big waster of water in the home and while you can buy a low-toilet, you could instead choose to be retro with your toilet, and buy yourself a composting toilet. While the thought of having a composting toilet in your home may seem disgusting, it is a great way to lower your water bill, while providing your property with excellent compost that can be used to grow a garden or a lawn.
The composting toilet is an aerobic processing system that treats human waste without the need for water. If it does use water, it uses very small amounts of water. The way that the human waste is processed is through composting and aerobic decomposition. The aerobic decomposition system actually works faster than other types of aerobic decomposition, including those that are found in typical septic systems.
Many homeowners choose to have composting toilets as an alternative to waste water treatment plants, sewers, or septic systems. Many homeowners choose them for the following reasons as well:
- They do not require water to flush, meaning that water is not wasted to flush human waste down the pipes.
- They do not want to discharge nutrients and harmful pathogens into areas that are environmentally-sensitive.
- They want to capture the nutrients in human waste.
While the composting toilet is little more than an advanced outhouse toilet, it works differently to ensure that the compost can be collected and used. The composting toilet works as follows:
- Most of the composting toilets operate at a temperature of 40 to 60 degrees Celsius, which is what bacteria thrive at. The bacteria actually provide a lot of the heat, and it is up to the owner of the toilet to provide heat insulation for the composting area of the toilet.
- Excess liquid is drained by a special drain into special units so that the composting process can have moisture levels of between 40 and 50 percent. Often the liquid is collected as gray water for other uses.
- Dry toilets are used by many homeowners, but some owners use solar toilets that use solar energy to create heat.
Composting toilets are great for your garden because human urine has a great deal of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Human feces are also a big source of potassium. So, you can help your garden by feeding the garden the waste you created by eating items from the garden.
