Great Green Ways to Help Your Lawn and Yard Look Better
If you want to have a great looking yard, but want to make your yard look great in an environmentally-friendly manner then there are several things you can do. Making a yard look great by using environmentally-friendly methods is easy and it is usually cheaper than doing things in a un-green way. Just follow these tips to having a yard that is green in both color and philosophy.
- Collect all the rain water that you can when it rains. You can use that rain water to water your lawn and your garden when thing are dry.
- When you want to clean off the driveway or your deck, do not use water to do it. This is just a waste. Instead, wait for the rain to come and let everything get washed off then. If you need to wash your deck or driveway, use rainwater you have collected.
- If you want fertilizer for your garden and your lawn, then make a compost pile. It is the best, and cheapest, form of fertilizer in the world.
- When you mow your lawn, leave the grass clippings on the lawn. This is a great fertilizer for the lawn and a good source of nitrogen.
- Instead of buying herbicides and pesticides to keep pests and weeds off of your lawn, use plants that will keep these things away.
- It can be great to light your yard and garden at night but that is a big waste of electricity. Instead, go to any garden or yard shop and buy some solar-powered lights. These provide you with free power for those lights and they look great. Better yet, you will not have any cords running through your yard and you will not have to buy any batteries.
One last tip for your yard is to make it more natural. The green lawn is slowly going out of fashion as more and more people choose to have a lawn that has native plants on it and is not always cut short. These lawns serve as an oasis for beneficial insects including ladybugs and butterflies. Talk to your homeowner association to find out if you are allowed to do this. Some people have been sued for allowing their lawn to go to a more natural state. This is unfortunate because green lawns do not fight global warming but natural lawns do.
