Ensuring Your Fridge Is Not Costing You Energy Dollars
Fridges keep things cold and are an essential part of the kitchen. If not for the fridge, food would go bad quicker, and we would probably be spending more on food than we do now. Thankfully, fridges exist to make our lives easier and colder, but they can be big energy hogs as well. Of all the appliances in your home, the fridge is the biggest energy consumer of them all. This is why it is important you practice good energy efficiency with your fridge.
- First of all, do not place your fridge near any heat sources. You should put it in a location that does not get a lot of sunlight, and is well-ventilated. This will keep you from wasting energy on a fridge that keeps heating up because of the sun beating down on it.
- For proper air flow to keep your fridge cool, you should ensure that there is at least 10 centimeters of space on both sides of the fridge, 10 centimeters behind the fridge and 30 centimeters above the fridge.
- Holding your fridge door open, or opening it too often lets cold air get out and that just wastes energy.
- Ensure that your fridge is not leaking cold air. This is a problem for two reasons. First, it means your home is colder and that requires the furnace to work harder, and two, it costs you money in keeping the fridge cold. A good method is to put a ten dollar bill between the fridge and the door. Close the door and if you can pull the dollar out without any resistance, then you have a fridge that is leaking energy.
- If your fridge is overcrowded, then it is going to have to work hard to keep everything cool.
- Do not put hot foods in your fridge until they have a time to cool.
- Defrosting your fridge is a very good idea. When ice begins to form in the freezer, it will lower the efficiency of the fridge. By defrosting, you are keeping that from happening and are therefore saving energy.
The fridge is an essential part of our lives, but it is a hog of energy. You can minimize the hogging power of the fridge by just practicing some good energy tips. You won’t have to worry about the fridge taking up so much energy, and you won’t be paying for wasted energy either.
