Choosing Eco-Friendly PaintOne of the most common renovations you will do to your home is painting. Paint is used in the billions of gallons across the planet every single year. However, paint can also be harmful for our planet and that leads many to looking for an alternative that is better for everyone.
Most paints use volatile organic compounds, which are compounds that allow the paint to stick to surfaces and dry quickly. One of the problems with VOCs is that they release into the air as the paint is drying and this can cause headaches, respiratory problems and skin irritation. Many people are now aware of this and it is why many paint manufacturers are looking for ways to make paint without VOC.
One alternative is to use milk paint, which is a natural paint that is safe, durable and extremely good as paint. Made from dried milk, limestone, clay and colored pigments from coal, berries, roots, seeds and minerals. It is sold in powder form and you then mix it with water in a blender. Then all you do is apply the milk paint to the raw wall surface.
Milk paint bonds permanently to wood fibers and does not chip at all. Milk paint is also porous so it allows walls and furniture to breathe.
If you want to find some regular paint but want to be environmentally friendly about it, then you can choose paint that is made from recycled paint. Many consumers now take their used paint to facilities that will recycle it into new paint that can be sold again. This way you are keeping paint from being disposed of improperly, but more importantly you are reducing consumption by reducing other people’s waste.
No matter what you choose to use for your home for paint, make sure it is something that is both environmentally-friendly and good for you. Many people do not realize that the products we have in our home around us can be dangerous. When we use paint, that paint evaporates and gets into our lungs and can cause problems. For years, lead paint was used before it was determined it was bad for people. The same is being seen with VOC. With more people choose recycled paint and milk paint, it would seem that the environment is getting a helping hand from those who want to paint and renovate their homes. | |||
